Growing Kale from Seed

Growing Kale from Seed

Kale is a cool weather crop and does well planting in either the spring or fall. Kale is one of the most nutrient rich foods making it a wonderful plant to add to your garden!

-If starting in small peat pots, sprinkleonly 5 seeds evenly over moist soil, then cover with 1/2” layer of soil (do not pack) . Kale can be directly seeded in your garden location in the fall or spring when temperatures are least 55 degrees.

-Germination 6 - 12 days

-Days to maturity 40-50 days

-Seedlings are ready to be transplanted 4–6 weeks after planting when they have 5-7 leaves.

-Transplant to 5 gallon pots or directly in the garden (12 inches apart).

-Consistent moisture will produce the best quality leaves.

-You can begin to harvest young kale leaves when the plant is at least 6 inches tall (about 25 days old). Work around the plant to pinch off the largest bottom leaves, leaving the center leaves untouched. This will allow new growth to develop from the center for continuous harvests.

-To harvest mature Kale leaves, wait for the plant to grow about 10"-12" tall, and harvest the large leaves with the same technique described above.

-Fertilize after first harvest with a balanced organic fertilizer, such as our Organic Starter & Transplanter Fertilizer.
